Summer News!

Mickleover Singers Excite

Saturday July 5th saw the Mickleover Singers perform their summer concert ‘Kaleidoscope.’  There was an extremely appreciative audience in St John’s Church who loved the singing of Japanese Songs, arranged by Bob Chilcott.  Listening to the choir perform these pieces seemed to transport people to the far east because much of the choral writing uses the pentatonic scale, prominent in eastern music.  There were also songs by Abba, John Rutter and from Disney films.  ‘How Much is that Doggie in the Window?’ featured many wonderful animal sounds and the evening was rounded off with ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ from Carousel.  This piece was dedicated to the recent deaths of footballers, Diogo Jota and his brother in Spain.  The audience joined the choir with a heartfelt rendition of the Liverpool FC Anthem.

The concert also featured the wonderful LOCA Wind Quintet, playing music by Mozart, Lennon and McCartney and from ‘The Godfather’ film.   Choir members, Ellen and Sheila sung a duet from ‘Chess’ and talented youngster Erin Kendall performed the song ‘Naughty’ from Matilda.  The event produced a wonderful mix of music, both vocal and instrumental.  One member of the audience, on leaving, was heard to say “this choir gets better and better.”  At the AGM, two days later, the choir was praised for their performances in and around the Derby area, which has included Sudbury Hall, and also thanked for their achievements in tackling new music.  If anyone reading this article fancies joining this developing choir, rehearsals resume on Monday September 8th in St. John’s Church.  2026 will be special as the Mickleover Singers will celebrate 85 years since they started as a group during the war.  Sadly, there are no original members!  Forming the choir helped to create some community spirit and distraction in the village during the dark days of war. Singing together still helps us to improve our mental health.  It’s not just the music and repertoire but also the community spirit.   Come and give it a go!

Spring is coming!

After the roaring success of our Christmas concert delivered to a full church on 14th December and featuring a superb solo performance from 18 year old Holly Curpen, rehearsals are now underway for our spring concert. This will take place on Saturday 29th March and we are already loving the uplifting songs we are practising. Bring on spring!!
